The Energy Audit

Every 6 months I go through an exercise I’ve coined as The Energy Audit - a deep look and my weekly schedule analyze how I’m investing my time and energy through the lens of compensation, time and energetic input / output. As a full time yoga teacher for the last 8 years I’ve noticed it’s incredibly easy to become time poor. You’re running around the city 5-7 days a week and left completely depleted. Your personal life and new opportunities hit the back burner and if you’re not careful you burn out before you have the chance to really hit your stride and create impact.

By utilizing the steps of The Energy Audit I better understand where I’ve become stagnant and more objectively understand when something is no longer adding value to my week. The last time I did this exercise I removed 5 classes from my weekly schedule and within 2-seeks had a new project and dream partnership presented to me - and the space to say yes!

In order for us to continue to evolve we must better understand when to let something go in order to create the space to pursue what’s to come.

Consider…

  • How am I spending my energy?

  • What am I ready to “weed out”?

  • What am I creating space for?

The Energy Audit:

Step 01: list out your weekly commitments (classes, clients, projects, etc)

  • how many days of the week are you working?

  • how much (consecutive) time off do you get regularly?

Step 02: evaluate each commitment

  • compensation - when was the last time you increased your rate and does it remain competative within your market for your up-to-date skill set.

  • time (include planning / commute) - understand the true hourly rate when you include all factors

  • energy input / output - determine if you feel energized or depleted when leaving this commitment. Not everything you do needs to make the most money, but if something is depleting you energetically AND not brining in the cash it’s gotta go.

Step 03: what will you doing 6 months from now

  • it’s one thing to understand where you are now, but understand where you’re headed will help inform which opportunites to pursue and what should be let go of to create more space.

Step 04: remove the bottom (1-3) performing commitments

  • this can be tough, but where steps 01 - 03 help us make informed decisions!

Now it’s your turn! Carve out 10 - 30 minutes to analyze your own energetic management and get ready to make some informed decisions.
